MY REVIEW ON PALLASMA’S AND ALBERTI’S TEXT, WHAT IT MEANS AND HOW IT IS IMPORTANT TO ME
PALLASMA JUHANI
“Construction in traditional cultures is guided by the body in the same way that a bird shapes its nest by movements of its body. Indigenous clay and mud architectures in various parts of the world seem to be born of the muscular haptic sense”-PALLASMA, Juhani.
This means that buildings are built so that humans can inhabit it. The form and shapes and materials in every building are used to make one have a particular experience. Just like a bird shapes it nest by using its body to see how comfortable he is at various stages that is how we build according to our body structures and form.
For instance, in the Greek architecture, some buildings were altered to fit the viewing of the eyes so that the eyes visually correct it. Also the size of the body parts played a key role in how their buildings were built.
Personally, this means that all the structure I design should have a good interaction with the inhabitants. For instance, if designing a building for tall people a 1m door is inappropriate for the building. So we must relate phenomenology (the experience derived from a structure) to our buildings.
ALBERTI BATTISTA LEON
“Painting is nothing but the intersection of the visual pyramid following a given distance, a fixed center and a certain lighting”-ALBERTI, Battista.
This is trying to tell us that the dependence on the eye is merely a facade of what we can get when all our other sense are used. From this, I understand that I should not rely solely on my eyes but o the other sense. When I visited the park tunnel, this helped me realized the importance and use of my other senses. If you close your eyes and you try to feel the walls and hear the sound it gives you a better insight to the structure of your environment.
